Though they hadn’t played as a team since March, Davis Legacy Peligro, a U18 boys soccer team, put on their uniforms one last time over the weekend at the Santa Cruz Beach Soccer Championships. With nine of the 10 players graduating from high school, it was one last chance for Peligro to play together as many of them have for more than five years. Sand soccer is an intense game with five to a side, three 12-minute periods, and a field about one-third the size of a regulation grass field. On Saturday, Davis showed its rust early on and fell behind 3-0 before bouncing back to score five consecutive goals to win 5-3. Scott Engelhardt found the net twice, to go with goals from Ryan Lee, Matthew Lee and Tyler Carson. Getting better with each contest, Peligro got three more scores from Engelhardt and one each from Carson, Scott Yackzan and Michael Seban to win their second game 6-1. Goals from Matthew Lee and Engelhardt, who scored in the final minute, gave Davis a 2-2 tie against SFRP Chivas 92 on Sunday, but Chivas moved on to the title game because of a tie breaker. Throughout the tournament, Diego Rivas-Bernardy was outstanding as the goalkeeper, and Andrew Superak, Max Laguna and Patrick Mullen provided key defense and supporting play.
