Davis Legacy Olympic U13 team advanced

The Davis Legacy Olympic U13 team advanced this past weekend in Morgan Hill to the quarterfinal round of the State Cup tournament. Olympic defeated West Contra Costa Alliance, the 3rd ranked team in Northern California, by a 3-1 margin. Olympic took advantage of its scoring opportunities and then fought off repeated surges by Alliance.

The first two goals resulted from one-on-one isolation plays with the opposing goalkeeper. Cristian Garcia scored early in the game and Lee LeVerrier followed shortly thereafter. Olympic's third goal came in the second half from a set shot to the middle that was headed in by Collin Holtz.

The defense was stalwart. Emmanuel Medina anchored the middle, while all the backs were instrumental in thwarting a frustrated Alliance offense.

Coaches Augie Rodriguez and Corey Cuvelier continued their strategic placements to match-up with the opposition. Olympic travels to Turlock to meet the Santa Cruz County Breakers Saturday.

It was a terrific team effort by all the players, shown above:
Alex Marelich, Coach Corey, Lee LeVerrier, Jacob Rutheiser, Derek Pleasants, Kian Bagheri, Collin Holtz, Zach McCollum, Danny Shellworth, Em Medina, Cristian Garcia, Coach Augie, Edgar Mendoza, Yannick Bretschneider, Cameron Cuvelier, Tyler Ramel and Adrian Rocha.

Davis Legacy U12 Girls

Davis Legacy U12 Girls takes First Place in the El Dorado Invitatiion tournament.

The Legacy U12 girls, Velocity, recently won the Eldorado Winter Classic. The team won the championship by playing excellent team defense led by Lindsay Callahan, the goalie, with a lot of help from Shannon Hansen, Brooke Palmer, Aimee Jackura and Tessa Tobar, which allowed but a single goal over the four games. The midfield was rock solid with Ceci Gutierrez, Emily Gao, Sophie Meads, Jamie Salazar, Meaghan Murphy, Ceci Cajandig and Miranda Steidler. The forwards,Kalani Ratnasiri, Kelsey Bean, Josie Campanelli and Natalie Vann, did an excellent job of ball hawking and causing havoc for the opponents defense. Kalani and Sophie scored in the game against San Ramon and the defense was solid, allowing a single goal. After a hard fought battle with Elk Grove, Sophie scored to secure the win. In the second day of competition, the Velocity was held to a 0-0 tie with San Juan, but went on to the Championship and defeated Sac United 1-0 on a beautiful goal by Ceci Cajandig.

Davis Legacy Xtreme Finalists in Las Vegas Coaches Classic

The Davis Xtreme U-15 girls’ competitive soccer team played out of state teams for the first time on their way to a second place finish at the Las Vegas Coaches Classic the weekend of February 16-18.

In the first day’s action, Xtreme defeated the Las Vegas Premiere, and the BSNC Blast of Idaho by scores of 1-0. In the first contest, Jenna Strack delivered the game winner to Olivia Muller who sent the ball to the net to give Davis Xtreme the win.

In the second contest, Jennie Hawkins deftly eluded Blast Blue defenders to score on a hard shot from fifteen yards out to give Davis its second win of the day. Outstanding defensive performances by Keelia Houston, Ali Yule, and cat like keeper Dorothy Mittow cemented both shutout victories and propelled Davis Xtreme into the semi finals action.

Xtreme faced America Futbol in the semi final opener. Xtreme was slow to react to America’s offensive attack and fell behind 0-1 at the half. In the second half, a swift, elusive Jennie Hawkins sent a powerful cross to Jenna Strack who fired goalward to
score the 1-1 equalizer. Two big saves by keeper Dorothy Mittow allowed Davis to maintain a 1-1 tie as time expired.

Neusport ’93 Gold offered Xtreme a formidable challenge in the fourth game as both teams fought to a scoreless standoff at the end of the first half. Allie Muller moved the ball down field as Davis began to control the tempo. Meagan Murray worked the middle effectively as finally, Ashley Torres broke free on a run and pass to Olivia Muller who penetrated the net with a strong shot to give Xtreme a slim 1-0 advantage which was maintained by stalwart defenders Houston, Mittow, and Yule. The Davis attack continued as fleet footed outside midfielder Alyssa Hendricks broke away from the Neusport defenders and fired a bender from the deep corner to put a 2-0 victory on ice for Xtreme and advance them to the championship contest.

Davis Xtreme faced America Futbol for the second time in the tournament, but this time the championship was at stake. Xtreme started slowly, as America took a huge 0-2 advantage into the second half. Undaunted and determined, Xtreme initiated an attack and swarmed the net of America for their first score of the game. Xtreme continued to assault the goal of America as Jennie Hawkins sent a blistering shot to the net to tie the game at 2-2 as regulation time expired. Tournament rules called for the use of penalty kicks to determine the final outcome of the Championship contest, and it was American Futbol who had the winning edge to take the U-15 girls Championship honors. Davis Xtreme proudly accepted the second place awards for their excellent play in the highly regarded Coaches Classic Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Davis Soccer Team Give Back

Several Davis Youth Soccer League (DYSL) teams decided to do something different than decorate ornaments or exchange cookies at their Holiday Parties this year. The Girls’ U12 and U13 Comp and U13 and U14 Girls’ Metro teams made fleece blankets during their parties to donate to Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento. The blankets will make the beds more cheerful and cozy for the children spending the holidays there.

The girls set out to make enough blankets so that every child who had to be in the hospital over the holidays could wake up to a new fleece blanket on their bed on Christmas morning. By joining together, the teams managed to surpass this goal. They also made silk “blankies” to comfort the littlest patients undergoing treatment over the holidays.

This was the second year that the U13 Comp team made fleece blankets during their Holiday party. They felt so good about this project last year that they decided to make it a Holiday tradition, and asked other teams to participate. “It makes me happy to think that the kids in the hospital will have something to cheer them up over the Holidays” said Monica Berry, a player on the team. “It’s a fun thing to do with our teammates and a great way to help other children” seconded teammate Megan Casey.

Anna Nicholson and Miranda and Meghan Steidler, who play on the U13 Metro, U12 Comp and U14 Metro teams respectively, joined in the effort by organizing blanket making Holiday parties with their own teammates. Their parties also were very successful. Parents of the players were enthusiastic supporters of the idea and hope to make it a tradition for their teams as well. With all 4 teams participating, the girls made nearly 70 blankets.

The blanket parties seemed to bring home for the girls the true spirit of the holidays; it’s better to give than to receive. Said Carol Owen, the mother of one of the blanket makers, “Our girls all have a lot of advantages. It’s really gratifying to see them do something good for someone who needs it. That’s what the holidays are about, isn’t it?”

Vortex Wins Championship

To finish off an impressive fall season, Davis Legacy Vortex won the Nor Cal League State Cup Championships in Manteca over the weekend. In the semi-final game on Saturday, Davis beat Elk Grove United 3-0. The first goal came with a cross from Tyler Cunningham to Clara Goin who shot it in. The second goal was a cross from Goin to Cunningham who made the goal. Strong defensive play by Monica Berry and Blake Bennick helped Vortex control the game. In the second half of the game, Tyler made the third goal as she ran in to beat the goalie after a shot over the head of players by Drew Tattam. Hannah Gendron made an impressive save toward the end of the game to keep the shut-out for Vortex.

In Sunday's final game, the Vortex beat the Mustangs 4-2. Minutes into the first half, Kylie Drexel headed the ball in after a corner kick by Tattam. Toward the end of the first half, the Mustangs evened up the score. The second goal came when Goin kicked the ball which was tipped by the goalie and then finished with a shot to the goal by Cunningham. Goin then took the ball up the field and shot for the 3rd Vortex goal. The final Vortex goal came from a long free kick by Tattam which sailed into the goal. The Mustangs came closer with a 2nd goal, but were prevented from any more by strong play by midfielders Lauren Wolcott and defenders Brynne Satre and Emma Phillips.

Davis Stikers U17G Metro

Last Saturday the Davis Strikers U17G Metro team won the District Cup A bracket. The Strikers arrived to the finals by defeating the Sunrise Storm 1-0, the Vacaville Glory 3-0 and the Prospector Ice 4-2 the previous weekend. In the final the Strikers defeated the Fairfield Storm 2-0. All the games were dominated by the Strikers’ solid defense and sharp attacks directed by ball controlling midfileders. In the final, even against a strong wind the Strikers allowed the Storm to have only two shots on goal, which were easily controlled by the keeper Kathy Benson. Rarely could the Storm get out of their half and were bombarded by the Striker with 15 direct shots on goal. In the first half a strong shot at goal by AJ Farrens, made the keeper parried the ball; the rebound was pounced by Justine Smith who landed the ball at the back of the net. In the second half the Strikers pressured the storm in their half, even against the wind, limiting them to stay in their defending half. The solid back line by Ali Cooluris, Tenaya, Natov, Nicole Zaragoza-Smith, Sarah Beam and Mia Ibrahim permitted not shots a the Strikers goal. The midfield made up of Rachael Hamilton, Corina Ma, Connie Harvey, Mei Mei Yates, Corey Leuchars , Sarah Johnson, Taylor Gendron and Julia Senders produced so many scoring opportunities that only luck saved the Strom. All that pressure paid off when the Strikers manage a string of well timed passes that ended with Sarah Beam directed the ball to Kaitlin Clancy who placed it low and to the side on the goal. The Coach comment was : “this is a group of young Women. That have proved their worth, have jell together as a team and are decided to go all the way to the State finals in March”

Tournament Finalist – Davis Legacy Xtreme U-15

The Davis Xtreme U-15 girls’ competitive soccer team participated in the Placer United Foothill Cup in Rocklin, Roseville & Cherry Island last weekend. Xtreme advanced to the championship game by winning two games and fighting for a tie in another.

In game one against the MDSL Shock, Olivia Muller sent a pass to Jennie Hawkins who opened the scoring with a long kick from the corner to give Xtreme a 1-0 lead. Hawkins then teamed up with Meagan Murray who scored the second goal to give Davis Xtreme a 2-0 halftime edge. Solid defense by Xtreme’s Estela Garibay, Jennifer Palmer, and the cat-like keeper Dorothy Mittow cemented the 2-0 decision for Xtreme.

The Benicia Arsenal gave Xtreme all they could handle in the second game by shutting down the Davis offensive attack. Davis Xtreme returned the favor however in what turned out to be a 0-0 defensive standoff.

In the third game against Placer ’93 Black both teams locked in yet another defensive battle leading to a 0-0 first half result. Davis held solid on defense and unleashed a punishing offensive attack in the second half by scoring three goals in an impressive offensive surge.  Alyssa Hendricks assisted Meagan Murray who headed the ball into the net for an early 1-0 lead. The two remaining goals were scored by scrappy Ashley Torres. The first came on a short run up the middle, and the second on a pin point pass by Jennie Hawkins to seal the 3-0 win. In the championship game, Xtreme was “stung” by the Orchard Valley Sting by a final score of 1-0. Key saves by keeper Dorothy Mittow, and sweeper Keelia Houston. Outstanding efforts by Jennie Hawkins, Olivia Muller, Jennifer Palmer Jenna Strack, and Alyssa Hendricks kept the game at 0-0 until late in the second half as a scramble in front of the Davis net led to the game winning score by the Sting.
